Common Ground 2017
This artwork was created for the Bernalillo County Public Safety Memorial in Tijeras, NM. It is a place to gather, reflect, and remember. The compass design in the plaza references how public safety workers find those in need of help. It also alludes to the fact that many who serve in this capacity desire to be a moral compass for their community.
Labyrinths are ancient designs that have been used as a meditation tool around the world from time immemorial. As we walk a labyrinth, the twists and turns quiet our minds and allow us to release hurt and trauma.
I named this plaza Common Ground because we have all lost someone. We have all experienced traumatic events, and this is a place where anyone may come to remember, grieve, and heal. The sunrise colors of the background symbolize the cycle of life and and the new beginnings that follow a loss.
